Delta State’s political arena just got a jolt. African Democratic Congress has anointed Dr Emmanuel Unuafe, a United Kingdom-based lecturer, as its gubernatorial flag-bearer for the 2027 election. The party’s primary in Asaba on Friday handed Unuafe the ticket without a single dissenting vote.

The choice exposes ADC’s deliberate play for an outsider untainted by local godfatherism. Unuafe lectures at Arden University, Coventry, and carries no known baggage from Delta’s notorious political factions. Yet the party’s internal cohesion remains fragile. Key stakeholders from the Anioma and Urhobo blocs had earlier threatened to bolt if the primaries were not transparent.

Legally, the nomination triggers a 14-day window for aggrieved aspirants to challenge the outcome in court. Politically, it sets ADC on a collision course with the state’s dominant PDP machinery. Governor Okowa’s anointed successor, Sheriff Oborevwori, already commands a 23-member legislative caucus and the state’s financial war chest. ADC’s grassroots presence in Delta is virtually non-existent, leaving Unuafe with a steep electoral mountain to climb.

This move is less about immediate victory and more about positioning ADC as a credible third force ahead of 2027. If Unuafe can secure a respectable showing, the party may bargain for federal appointments or legislative slots in a future coalition government. For now, Delta’s power brokers will watch closely to see if this UK don can turn academic pedigree into political capital.
