Delta State’s political map just got redrawn. African Democratic Congress has picked Dr. Emmanuel Unuafe, a United Kingdom-based academic, as its gubernatorial candidate. The party’s primaries ended Friday in Asaba with Unuafe as the sole contender.
PDP’s dominance is cracking. APC’s opposition remains weak. This isn’t accidental. ADC is deliberately positioning Unuafe as the clean alternative to Delta’s political establishment. His academic background and lack of local political ties could appeal to voters exhausted by years of godfatherism and intra-party feuds.
The nomination comes with immediate risks. INEC’s registration deadline is tight, and Unuafe’s residency status will face legal scrutiny. His UK base gives opponents an easy attack line—accusations of being disconnected from local realities are already surfacing. Yet ADC insiders argue the move is calculated; Unuafe’s outsider status could shield him from the usual allegations of corruption and backroom deals.
If Unuafe gains momentum, the big parties will respond. They will fight dirty. PDP and APC have deep pockets and dirtier tactics—smear campaigns, court cases, and last-minute defections are all on the table. The real question is whether Delta voters are ready for a candidate who isn’t steeped in the state’s political muck.
